Umaitsagh
Umait, sagh is the Wyandott Indian word for "Earth". Walnut has all the earthy features. It has a variety of colors as you can see in the picture. The background of the picture is a magnified picture of what walnut looks like when just planed. It is a combination of colors dominated by purple. After you work with it a bit the browns work out and when you put a oil based polyurethane on it darkens the wood. If you're wondering how you get a white walnut (nose piece and on the leg), you look for a piece of sapwood and it could be white. Sapwood is near the outer edges of the tree. Normally you don't see this white in walnut because the mill cuts it off with the bark. Makes for an interesting feature though. You have a lot more options in selecting interesting boards if you deal with the mill as opposed to a lumber yard. The walnut used here is Black Walnut ( Juglans nigra) which is resistant to decay, has a specific gravity of .55 and is classified in the Semi-Ring-Porous Subgroup II Umait, sagh's eyes are a sparkling medium brown hue and his hair is golden blonde. The rocker is constructed from walnut also. Not an easy task. I had to use 8 thin strips per rocker and had to wash them (with acetone) to remove the acidity and oils and clean the pores to accept the glue before bending. Even the dowels connecting all the pieces on the rocker are walnut. Umait, sagh weighs 77 lbs, including the rocker. |
